Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to record a song?
This can vary project to project and we can help advise you on the best course to take. Recording costs depend on several factors: the complexity of your song (a solo acoustic track versus a full band arrangement), how prepared you are (demo ready versus still writing), your timeline, and what services you need.
A simple vocal-and-guitar song might take 4-6 hours and cost significantly less than a full production with multiple instruments, harmonies, and extensive mixing.
We offer flexible options – hourly rates for straightforward projects (min. 3 hours), day rates for intensive sessions, and package deals for EPs or albums that can provide better value.
During our consultation, we’ll discuss your vision, budget, and timeline to recommend the most cost-effective approach.
Sometimes recording multiple songs in one session saves money, or we might suggest a staged approach – tracking first, then mixing later when budget allows. We want to help you get the best recording possible within your means, so let’s talk about what you’re working with and find the right solution for your project.
How long does it take to record a song?
Recording time varies based on complexity and preparation. A simple acoustic song might take 3-4 hours, while a full band arrangement could take 8-12 hours or spread across multiple days. Well-rehearsed artists typically work faster. We’ll give you a realistic timeline estimate once we discuss your specific project and goals.
In general, about 1 day per song is a good starting point.
What is engineering vs. producing?
When you hire one of our engineers, you can expect them to cover the technical aspects of the art of recording sound and to capture high quality recordings to your specification. They’ll handle microphone placement, signal routing, and operating equipment to ensure clean, professional audio capture. Our engineers focus on the technical execution of your creative vision and delivering polished recordings that meet industry standards.
When you book a producer, they will also do that, but will contribute to the project on a musical level and guide it on a musically concise and final direction with you. A producer acts as a creative collaborator who helps shape the song itself – suggesting arrangement changes, coaching performances, and helping you make artistic decisions that serve the song. They bring an objective ear to your music, helping you discover what your sound should be.
Think of an engineer as your technical specialist who captures your sound perfectly, while a producer is your creative partner who helps you discover what that sound should be.
There is a natural cross-over between the 2 disciplines and most of our engineers are also producers. Visit their profile pages for more information and examples of their work.
What equipment & software do you have?
You can find a list of the equipment on the Studio page. In addition to that, we have an extensive range of high-end microphones, backline and access to additional hired equipment available on request by BHSS.
